Une page petit in-4 (196 x 157 mm), sur un bifeuillet, adresse autographe au verso, trace de cachet. Petite déchirure par bris de cachet touchant à un mot. Aux abois, Sade envisage de vendre sa terre de Mazan. "Je manque, j’emprunte pour vivre, il est odieux à vous de me laisser dans cet état, je vous supplie de m’envoyer sur le champ de l’argent, j’écouterai tous vos détails quand j’aurai le ventre plein. Je vais écrire à Mazan relativement à l’anglois. Je suis fâché qu’il vous ait manqué ; il faudrait faire mettre cet homme dans un hopital comme fou […] De l’argent, de l’argent, au nom du ciel de l’argent, je meurs de faim. Surtout que votre banquier me paiye tout de suite, et non à 10 jours de grâce". Il ajoute, dans la marge, d’une petite écriture serrée qu’il sera peut-être nécessaire de vendre Mazan puisque même son régisseur n’ose y entrer. Criblé de dettes, le marquis de Sade devait se résigner à vendre, non pas Mazan, mais son château de Lacoste, vandalisé et en partie détruit en septembre 1792. Malgré l’opposition de sa femme, il le céda, en octobre 1796, au député du Vaucluse Stanislas Joseph Rovère.
