LISZT. LETTRE AUTOGR. SIGNÉE À HECTOR BERLIOZ, (C.1854), À PROPOS DU POÈME SYMPHONIQUE "MAZEPPA" (1 P. IN-8)

Liszt le remercie de ses conseils pour son poème symphonique Mazeppa : "Je suis levé depuis une heure cher Berlioz. J'ai refait la fin de Mazeppa. Ton observation est parfaitement juste, et m'a frappé à l'instant. Merci donc de tout. Bien à toi. Je serai chez moi vers moi vers 1 heure et demi". Apparemment inédite, cette brève note révèle l'aide que Berlioz apporta à Liszt pour Mazeppa, composé entre 1851 et 1854 et interprété pour la première fois le 16 avril 1854. Trois semaines plus tard, Berlioz fit une brève halte à Weimar du 3 au 6 mai 1854, probablement celle évoquée dans sa lettre du 2 juillet : "Je vois par un journal que tu as fait exécuter ton Mazeppa à Weimar ; tu devrais bien m'écrire là-dessus quelques détails ; j'en profiterais pour mon prochain feuilleton. Je dirais, (ce qui est vrai) que j'ai parcouru la partition à mon dernier passage à Weimar. Je m'en tirerai de façon à ne pas te compromettre, sois tranquille..." (Berlioz, Correspondance, n° 1773). Ce projet d'article de Berlioz dans Le Journal des débats n'aboutira pas : Liszt ne fournit pas les détails nécessaires sur son concert. Les visites de Berlioz à Weimar entre 1852 et 1856 furent l'un des moments forts de sa carrière. This brief but apparently unpublished note reveals the assistance Berlioz gave to Liszt with Mazeppa. Liszt composed the symphonic poem over the years 1851 to 1854 and first performed it on 16 April 1854.  Three weeks later, Berlioz made a brief stop at Weimar on 3-6 May 1854, perhaps alluded to in his letter to Liszt of 2 July: "Je vois par un journal que tu as fait exécuter ton Mazeppa à Weimar; tu devrais bien m’écrire là-dessus quelques détails; j’en profiterais pour mon prochain feuilleton. Je dirais, (ce qui est vrai) que j’ai parcouru la partition à mon dernier passage à Weimar. Je m’en tirerai de façon à ne pas te compromettre, sois tranquille..." (Berlioz, Correspondance, no.1773). However Berlioz's piece in the Journal des débats never materialized, because Liszt failed to supply the requisite details of his concert.  Berlioz's visits to Weimar during the years 1852 to 1856 were among the high points of his career.  He was invited by Liszt, who conducted Benvenuto Cellini several times, whilst Berlioz gave successful concerts there in 1853 and 1855.
