Catalogue Note

Lilian Holmes Jenness (1889-1965) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When she was a young woman she moved to China to serve as a Presbyterian missionary, and she spent much of her time in Shanghai. Lilian was close to the family of Pang Yipeng (1901-1998), who was a successful artist and illustrator in Shanghai. Lilian adopted one of Pang's sons when she had to leave China in 1949. This Wu Hufan scroll was very likely gifted to Lilian at the time, and it has remained in the family since then.
