  • 19.2 cm, 7 1/2  in.
modelled in the form of a tortoise, its body decorated with gilt florets, the domed shell forming the removable cover

Condition

The turtle box and cover are in good overall condition with expected light surface wear and occasional pitting or minute dents, all consistent with age. There is some malachite oxidation on the interior.

This distinct tortoise-form vessel is modelled after a Tang dynasty prototype, an example of which was excavated from Famen Temple, Fufeng County in 1987, believed to be used to store ground tea powder in imperial tea ceremonies during the Tang dynasty.
