Description

  • 17.1 and 16.4 cm, 6 3/4  and 6 1/2  in.
the globular teapot decorated with two chrysanthemum sprays, the cover with a lion finial; the other of hexagonal section, set with a facetted spout and an angular wood handle, one side engraved with prunus sprays, the reverse with an inscription signed Zhu An, the inside of the pot with a maker's mark, Yang Pengnian zhi, the pewter cover set with a jade finial

Condition

Pewter encased teapot: there are general bruises and surface scratches as well as casting flaws. Yixing teapot: the finial on the cover appears to be stabilised. There are minor nicks to the fragile extremities, including the rims of the vessel and cover and the edges of the floral decoration. General surface wear, especially along the edges of the base.

Another pewter-encased teapot signed Yang Pengnian, similarly engraved with flowering sprays, is in the collection of Nanjing Municipal Museum and illustrated in Yixing Purple Clay Ware, Beijing, 1990, pl. 60. See also an example sold in these rooms, 31st May 2018, lot 403.
