Description

  • 12.8 cm, 5 in.
the upper section decorated with petals to the exterior, pierced with an aperture to one side and applied with a candle holder in the well, all supported on a columnar stem with a petal-fluted collar and a domed base

Condition

Overall good condition with original flaws including a short firing crack with associated glaze crackles to the domed base.

Catalogue Note

An oil lamp of this form, but covered in a yellowish-celadon glaze, unearthed near Miaogaozhen, Suichang county, Zhejiang province, is illustrated in Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, pl. 277; another was sold in our New York rooms, 9th December 1987, lot 249; and a larger one was sold in our London rooms, 30th April 1974, lot 231. Compare also an oil lamp of more elongated form excavated at the Fengdongyan kiln site, included in the exhibition Longquan Ware: Chinese Celadon Beloved of the Japanese, Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Nagoya, 2012, cat. no. 124.
