Catalogue Note

These eight portraits were part of an album depicting Mughal rulers, each of them identified in the cartouches above the portrait as well as by an inscription in English on the gold border. The style of the works point towards the north of India and recall similar portraits, see for example Sotheby’s Dubai, 13 November 2013, lot 71. The emperors represented are named as follows: Timur (d.1405); Miran Shah son of Timur (d.1408); Ahmed Shah, son of Muhammad Shah (d.1442); Sultan Umer Sheikh Mirza son of Abu Said (d.1494); Sultan Babur, son of Umar Sheikh Mirza (d.1530) Sultan Jahangir, son of Akbar (d.1627); Jahandar Shah, son of Bahadur Shah (d.1713), and Muhammad Shah, grandson of Bahadur Shah (d.1748).
