Catalogue Note

The use of paper-thin gazelle skin in Qur'an production of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is definitely unusual and appears to have been restricted to very few examples. Few Qur’ans on gazelle skin have been offered in the market, some sold in these rooms, 8 October 2014, lot 44; 3 October 2012, lot 26; 9 April 2008, lot 26; 28 April 1993, lot 109 and 15 October 1984, lot 281. Scrolls are even more rare, making this example quite exceptional.
