Catalogue Note

The design of the 'Tree' Kazaks derives from the earlier Chahar Bagh carpets of Northwest Iran and Azerbaijan.  The island pools have become octagonal medallions with foliate motifs; the water channels have disappeared, but the regular layout of tree-filled garden squares is alluded to in the symmetrical placement of the trees. A closely related example was illustrated by Eberhart Herrmann in Von Konya bis Kokand, Nr.28, p.74. Two other related examples include one dated AH 1273/1856 AD, sold Christie's New York, May 12, 1986, Lot 32,and another, sold Sotheby's New York, May 30, 1987 Lot 98.
