Condition

Overall very good condition. When viewed firsthand, the table displays a rich deep brown tone, which is less black compared to the printed catalogue illustration. The veneer with some minor craquelure consistent with age, all stable, and with some scattered minor surface scratches, abrasions, and wear consistent with age and use. The table with some light, cloudy discolorations to the finish concentrated to the two semi-circular sections of the table and one extension leaf. These sections of the table with some very slight sun fading compared to the two other extension leaves. The table and leaves with some occasional minor and small edge losses to the veneer, with a few slightly larger veneer losses to the bottom edge of one semi-circular section, visible in the catalogue illustration. The legs and feet are in very good condition with some expected light wear concentrated to the feet. An extremely elegant form by Jean-Michel Frank. Catalogue Note

The present table was originally designed by Jean-Michel Frank for the Rockefeller dining room at 810 Fifth Avenue.  As with the other furnishings he designed for the Rockefeller interior, the table was executed by Frank's workshop in Paris and sent by steamship to New York.  When it arrived damaged, Rockefeller wrote to Frank with the unfortunate news and had the table remade to Frank's precise specifications by Schmieg & Kotzian in New York.  Frank approved of and was satisfied with the result, offered here, which he was aware of through his friend, fashion designer Elsa Schiapparelli, who had visited the Rockefeller's completed interior and praised Frank's exceptional work.
