  • height of tallest 6 1/2 in.; 16.5 cm
comprising: an Imari porcelain incense box and cover in the form of the poetess Ono no Komachi wearing a kimono; a small Imari whistle in the form of a karako (Chinese boy) laying on its belly; and a pottery and lacquer figure of an emaciated poet (possibly Matsuo Basho), the moveable head formed in clay. Together with a wood stand, unsigned. 6 pieces.

Condition

The whistle is in generally good condition with only minor expected surface wear (particularly to the black enamel). The box and cover are in generally good condition with only minor expected wear to the rims and one small frit to the edge of the box. The figure has scattered small flake chips and cracks to the surface, and the fabric cloak has embrittlement, discoloration, tears and losses (as illustrated); the figure and the hat are each painted in red with the Rockefeller inventory number 10-38.
