Catalogue Note

This is a highly-finished watercolour version of Gregory's Royal Academy exhibit of 1900, which was submitted as his Diploma Work to the institution. There are significant differences, to the stool under the musician's foot and to the background. Gregory also painted a picture of a similar subject The Lute Player which depicts the same model. Apres was painted only a couple of years after Gregory's best-known painting Boulter's Lock, Sunday Afternoon (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight).
