Catalogue Note

The phrase engraved on the matrix of this seal can be translated as: ‘Shall he be elevated to the ancient honour?’ The language is historicising, in the style of the Italian poet Vittorio Alfieri (1749-1803), glancing back to the epic poetry of Torquato Tasso.
