Catalogue Note

Admiral John Byng (1704-1757) was a Royal Navy officer. He is remembered for failing to relieve a besieged British garrison during the Battle of Minorca at the start of the Seven Years' War. Upon return to Britain, Byng was court-martialled and found guilty of failing to prevent Minorca being taken by the French. He was sentenced to death by a firing squad in 1757.
