Description

  • Thomas Molesworth
  • An Early and Rare Console Table from Snyder Ranch, Wyoming
  • fir, carved and stained pine, hammered brass tacks
  • 30 1/8  x 48 1/4  x 23 3/8  in. (76.5 x 122.6 x 59.4 cm)
with integral hand-carved magazine rack

Provenance

Commissioned by Simon Snyder for Snyder Ranch, Valley, Wyoming, circa 1933-1934
Fighting Bear Antiques, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Condition

Overall in very good, age appropriate condition. There are natural knots, irregularities and separations in the wood grain, typical for Inland fir, and this has been reinforced in areas with wood infill in areas by Molesworth at the time of production. The wood surfaces with minor and scattered light scratches, nicks, and minor areas of rubbing, all consistent with age and use. There is an aged surface scratch on the tabletop measuring approximately 14 ½ in. in length. One corner (not visible in the catalogue illustration) with a loss to the outer edge (measuring approximately ⅜ x ¾ in.). Some portions of the hand-carved magazine rack with red painted highlights, possibly original. The brass tacks all appear present and original.

Catalogue Note

This is one of the earliest examples known to be executed by Molesworth.  With creatively carved scenes of the flora and fauna of the American west, the carved front, sides and back panels are most certainly executed by Molesworth’s own hand.
