Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a faint stretcher mark visible, notably corresponding to the horizontal stretcher bar member. There are two very small spots of flaking towards the centre of the composition, in and around the net closer to the left. However, these are very small and barely visible to the naked eye. Ultra-violet light reveals some lines of retouching possibly addressing flaking in the sky below the diagonal sail, and one very small spot in the sea close to the hull of the boat closer to the left edge. This work is in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a simple gilt frame with some losses.

Catalogue Note

Lake Mariout lies on the seaboard of the Nile delta, separated from the Mediterranean by the Isthmus of Alexandria. Fed by the sweet waters of the Nile, the lake has always been a rich fishing ground, especially for Nile perch.
