Condition
The panel is flat, even, and ensuring a stable support. Ultra-violet light reveals a layer of uneven varnish which prevents if from fully penetrating and makes the surface quite difficult to read. However, some very minor and isolated spots of retouching are visible along the lower edge, including a very fine vertical stroke in the lower left corner addressing a very fine scratch. Some other small spots are also visible in the guard's neck and in the orange garment. Otherwise, this work is in good condition and ready to hang.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note
In 1889 Eisenhut exhibited a work titled In Ungnade ('Fallen from Favour') at the Glaspalast exhibition in Munich. Also known as In Ungnade. Gefesselte Sklavin im Harem (see F. von Boetticher, 1974), this work met with great success and was reproduced in numerous etchings. The artist himself appears to have painted at least another version of this composition, sold at Sotheby's London in 2014. However, an etching by Jenő Doby executed in 1890, and currently in the collection of the National Gallery in Budapest, suggests the present painting might have been the one exhibited in Munich, as Doby's image matches the present work in all its details.
