DEMI-PARURE, ILIAS LALAOUNIS, 'DAWN OF ART', 1970S

Estimate
1,600 - 1,800 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

Comprising: a pair of hammered earrings of hoop design, post fittings; and a planished bangle of torque design, with spherical details and hinged underside, inner circumfrence approximately 170mm, earrings signed and bangle partially signed Lalaounis, maker's marks. The Dawn of Art collection was one of the earliest creations of fourth generation Greek goldsmith Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013), who having worked for Zolotas, which was run by his uncle, founded his own company in 1969 setting up his headquarters at the base of the Acropolis. This collection was inspired by prehistoric European and Greek art and archaeological finds, the simple forms and elegant lines translated by Lalaounis into modern, wearable jewels, seen in the design of the bangle which has been influenced by part of a copper tool from the Bronze age. Cf.: Ilias Lalaounis, Metamorphoses, Greece, 1984, pg. 38, for an illustration of a choker of similar design.
