Chetham's Library, founded in 1653, is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. The Library began acquiring books in August 1655, mainly theology, law, history, medicine and science.
Henderson remarks: “Hutton had heard of this addition to the table, but he had never seen it and seems to have doubted the existence of this chiliad”. While Henderson also failed to see a copy, he reported the probable existence of such copies in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge, and Library of the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford.
