Catalogue Note
Hamming’s landmark paper introducing publicly the concept of self-correcting codes for computing machines. Working in the Bell Laboratories, after contributing to the Manhattan Project, Hamming thought that if computers could recognize their errors then surely they could be programmed to correct themselves. These set of error-correcting codes are now generally known as Hamming codes.
