Catalogue Note

Bowden's anthology, by far the best on computing from the 1950s, discusses Turing's remarks on the use of computers to play chess in chapter 25. Bowden was an employee of Ferranti Ltd., the manufacturer of the Ferranti Mark I designed at Manchester University, and the first electronic digital computer to be delivered to a commercial customer.
