Catalogue Note

UNRECORDED FIRST EDITION. The author, a “Gentleman belonging to the Navy Office” had submitted his instrument to Robert Hooke, who reported to Fellow-Members of the Royal Society on 3 April 1700, stating that he “finds it to be Ingenious and of good Use, for the more Expeditious performance of the Operations mentioned to be thereby performable in the Title of [Wastell’s] book”. Thus encouraged, Wastell “found out some further Uses of his Portable Scale, which he designs to Print and Add to the former [edition] by way of Supplement” (History of the Works of the Learned, June 1700, pp.353-355). A second edition “with additions”, likewise “Printed for the Author, and sold by Richard Mount, at the Postern on Tower-Hill” then appeared. A single copy of it is recorded by ESTC R230807 (Folger Library).
