Catalogue Note

THE FIRST WORK TO DESCRIBE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ADJUSTABLE PROPORTIONAL COMPASS, which was a precursor of the sector and could be used for enlarging or contracting diagrams according to their lengths, areas or volumes. It was apparently first developed by Joost Bürgi, and although published by Hulsius, he described just its use but not its construction.
