Catalogue Note

A handbook for tradesmen, apparently derived from the anonymous La vraye maniere pour apprendre a chiffrer et compter (Lyon: Claude Veycellier, [1535]), of which only the British Library copy has survived (USTC 55857; Hoock & Jeannin no. -20.5). There are similarities also to Gilles Huguetan's Tables de divers comptes, printed as the second part of Etienne de la Roche's L'arismetique et geometrie (Lyon, 1538; see lot 338). Another edition was printed by Thibaud Payen in 1555 (Murhard, Litteratur der mathematischen Wissenschaften, I, p.171; FB 9182; USTC 76306: “no known surviving copy”).
