Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION. Francesco dal Sole was a French mathematician active in Venice and then Ferrara. As the Duke of Ferrara, Ercole II d'Este, was married to Renata of France, there was a substantial French contingent at the Este court. The printers were probably French and were active in Ferrara from 1546 to 1558; Edit16 lists nine works printed by them, including Messisbugo's book on banquets. This work is a primer of arithmetic, possibly adapted from an earlier work, Libretto de Abaco (Venice, 1526).
