"Cardano contributed to a number of disciplines, including medicine, astrology and gambling, but his greatest fame rests upon his work in pure mathematics. His first book on the subject was Practica arithmetice, devoted to advanced numerical calculation and including several original methods of mnemonic calculation, transformations of algebraic equations and expressions and solutions to equations above the second degree" (Norman).
