Catalogue Note

André Osmond (1766-1837) was librarian for the duchesse de Berry and was also curator to the Bibliothèque Mazarine. André Osmond met Corot through his nephew, Abel Osmond (1794-1840). Corot regularly stayed at the Osmond's Château de la Motte, near Saint Lô : that is where he met the Elie family, cousin to the Osmond and to whom he offered a few paintings.
Martin Dieterle and Claire Lebeau believe the painting was executed circa 1834-36. Given the austere and academical technique here, and the model's age, we would rather say the painting was executed earlier, circa 1822-23.
