Condition

- original canvas - a few scratches which probably appeared during the execution of the painting ; a drip of matter lower left, probably appeared during the execution as well - painting is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light cleaning - label glued lower right on the canvas - small scratch lower right - under UV light, no repaint or retouch visible. - the frame conceals 3cm of the composition on the lower part, where there is a small label "Fotogr" ; the frame conceals approx. 2 cm on the right as well. Perfect condition.

Catalogue Note

Originaire de Ferrare, Giovanni Boldini s’installe à Paris en 1871 où il se lie rapidement au marchand d’art Goupil. Peint autour de 1878, Lavandière et jeune femme brune près de la Seine rassemble dans une composition dynamique deux sujets appréciés de Boldini à cette époque : la lavandière et le portrait mondain. Dès la fin du XIXe siècle, Boldini devient l’un des peintres favoris des femmes du monde et ses tableaux sont particulièrement appréciés par les collectionneurs à l'échelle internationale, tels que William H. Stewart, Henry Gibson ou encore William Vanderbilt.

Ce tableau est un parfait exemple de ce moment charnière dans la carrière du peintre fétiche de la Belle Epoque. Il paraît en vente pour la première fois depuis l'exposition de 1936 à la galerie Charpentier, Paris.
