Catalogue Note

Joseph-Bernard Artigue probably met Ringel in the class of Alexandre Falguière, in the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Ringel made bronze, terracotta, sandstone, wax, enamel or pate de verre medallion portraits of many celebrities of his time. Music was very influencial on his work, notably on his nine allegorical figures after Beethoven's Symphonies or another one after Hector Berlioz's Damnation of Faust. He is also the author of cast iron masks and seahorses on the facade of Castel Béranger by Hector Guimard. A lifetime photography of the present bust was probably taken in the sculptor's studio (family archives).
