- relined - important tear in shape of "Z" in the background - important tear in shape of an half-square along the muzzle of the calf - several repaints and small tears all over the surface of the canvas - a few restorations a long the frame - multiple wears on the jacket and along the calf - a tear along on the right side starting from background and finishing in the sleeve - several small tears under the right sleeve to the horn of the calf - yellowished varnish. the painting will benefit from a slight restoration

Edouard Dubufe paints a first version of this painting in 1856, which is presented at the Salon the next year and receives great reviews. Art dealer Gambart commissions a second version to the artist : the painting we are here presenting.
The 1856 version is kept at the Musée National du Château de Versailles.
