Catalogue Note

This drawing was probably executed in 1804, when David started making sketches in Notre-Dame de Paris for his famous painting, The Coronation of the Emperor Napoléon (Musée du Louvre, Paris). Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat observe that David's touch as a copist evolved since his débuts and is more angular than before.
David represents Nicolas Coustou's Pietà placed in the cathedral in 1725.
