Condition

- thin matter in some areas - a few minor traces are scattered on the surface, probably due to the paper's irregularity - a minor scratch is barely visible on the right Very good condition.

Catalogue Note

Delacroix enjoyed sketching things as he saw them, and always carried a sketchbook with him. He often used watercolor, but preferred pastel, which was a faster medium to work with. 
He went to Frépillon several times : his aunt, Félicité Longroy, wife of Henri Riesener, had retired there when her husband died in 1828.
This pastel belonged to Alfred Robaut, who most probably offered it to Adrien Demont, painter and son-in-law to Jules Breton.
