Description

  • The elephant: 31.5 cm, 12 3/8  in.
standing four-square, the head turned to the right with a long curled trunk flanked by tusks, the turquoise body caparisoned with a saddle draped with a cloth decorated with auspicious motifs including a flying bat on each side, surmounted by a yellow archaistic gu vase detailed with stylised lotus scrolls, all supported on a plinth platform centered with a dragon motif

Provenance

Collection of Gustav Detring (1842-1913) and/or Constantin von Hanneken (1854-1925), and thence by descent.

Condition

this is in overall good condition, with some pitting and minor losses to enamel, in particular to the back neck and the vase's rim, both detachable tusks and tail are slightly bent, some surface scratches and minor dents throughout.
