July 15, 1975."Slayton was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, but was grounded in 1962 due to an irregular heart rhythm. He went on to serve as NASA's Director of Flight Crew Operations, and finally, in 1975 at the age of 51, he was cleared to fly, and became the docking module pilot for the Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), making him the oldest person to fly in space at the time.
