Catalogue Note

The Skylab I emblem features the space station in orbit as the Earth eclipses the Sun. SIGNED by CHARLES CONRAD, JOE KERWIN, and PAUL WEITZ. The Skylab II emblem features Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man with hemispheres of the Sun and Earth in the background. This symbolizes the three main science objectives of the flight – Solar and Earth sciences while studying human adaptation to a weightless environment during the 59 day flight. SIGNED by ALAN BEAN, OWEN GARRIOTT, and JACK LOUSMA.

The Skylab 3 emblem uses a large Arabic number 3 to encompass the symbols of a tree for earth science, a hydrogen atom which is the most basic building block of the universe, a human figure for medical research in the space environment, and a rainbow as a symbol of promise from this research for all mankind. SIGNED by JERRY CARR, ED GIBSON, and BILL POGUE.
