Catalogue Note
This spoon is part of the so called 'Heart and Pellet Group', possibly associated with the 'London Forgery Group' which Timonthy Kent discusses on page 5 of his book West Country Silver Spoons and Their Marks 1550-1750. There were several examples from this group in the collection of H. D. Ellis, Esq. which was sold by Sotheby's in November, 1935. It included five seal-top spoons similar to the present example and bearing the identical mark (lots 93-97).
