Catalogue Note

Cadell made his first trip to Iona in 1912 where he met George W. Service, a wealthy Glasgow ship-owner. Returning to Iona for the following summer Service purchased his first picture from Cadell. He became one of the artist’s most avid patrons and purchased more than a hundred paintings by Cadell, hanging in virtually every room of his homes in Glasgow and Dumbartonshire. Cadell and the Service family became firm friends and the artist spent many happy days with the Services on Iona and on their yacht cruising around the Western Isles – it is probably their yacht depicted in the present watercolour.
