Ferdinand Hodler

In September 1908 the Swiss National Bank commissioned Ferdinand Hodler to design the new fifty and hundred franc banknote for which he conceived the motif of the “Holzfäller” (logger) and the “Mäher” (mower). He intended to title the image of the logger “Die Kraft”, as his movement had been captivated in the moment of utmost tension just before knocking down the axe. Being unhappy with the tiny format of the banknote, Hodler created seven small and twelve large paintings on canvas which he sold with great success. Using only a few vertical and diagonal lines Hodler managed to brilliantly capture the logger’s concentration, the tension of his body and his strength.


Im September 1908 beauftragte die Schweizerische Nationalbank Ferdinand Hodler mit der Gestaltung einer neuen Fünfzig- und Hundertfrankennote, für die der Maler einen Holzfäller und einen Mäher entwarf. Für das Bild des Holzfällers, dessen Bewegung in äusserster Anspannung kurz vor dem Niederschlagen der Axt festgehalten ist, hatte Hodler zunächst den Titel « Die Kraft » vorgesehen. Unzufrieden mit dem kleinen Format der Banknoten schuf er in der Folge sieben kleine und zwölf grossformatige Fassungen auf Leinwand, die er mit grossem Erfolg verkaufen konnte. Mit nur wenigen Mitteln gelang es Hodler in diesen Gemälden, Konzentration, Anspannung und Kraft durch die von vertikalen und diagonalen Linien dominierte Komposition auszudrücken.
