the first with cream-colored slip covered in a clear glaze, with a sloping, slightly concave top, with an incised quatrefoil enclosing rolling waves; the second sancai-glazed, of bean-shaped form, the slightly concave top incised with a pond scene of a heron amid lotus beneath a weeping willow tree (2)

Provenance

The cream-glazed pillow: Unidentified label on back, acquired between 1970-1979.
The sancai pillow: Sotheby's London 8th July 1975, lot 98.

Condition

The cream-colored pillow is more ivory in color than the illustration; it is in overall good condition with only minor expected wear (including scattered frits and wear to the edges, as illustrated), small specks of kiln grit, and short firing lines. The glazes on the sancai pillow are deeper in color than the illustration; the pillow has expected wear including some darkening to the biscuit from burial and small scattered flakes to the glaze and chips to the edges (all as illustrated) (larges flake chip is approx. 3.8-cm long), and minor firing tears.
