Catalogue Note

The sitter was born in St Petersburg and served as Finance Minister under Alexander I. He married Princess Varvara Sergeevna Urusova (1751-1831), with whom he had two children and he became Count in 1801. Borovikovsky painted a number of portraits of the family and there is a preparatory sketch for the present work in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.1
