Condition

Original canvas. There are two repaired tears to the sky with corresponding patches on the reverse. There are areas of scattered craquelure, most noticeably in the sky above the central figures. Some flecks of paint loss are visible above the soldier's head and between the trees in the background as well as scattered elsewhere. There is a layer of surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals large areas of retouching to the centre of the sky, to the top left edge and lower left corner, the headgear of the officer, to the soldiers to the centre of the left edge and in a few places elsewhere. Held in a wooden simple frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Alexander Nikolaevich Popov specialised in depictions of military and battle scenes. One of his best known works is The Protection of the Eagles Nest by the Orions and Briants on the 12th of August 1877 (1893) now in the collection of the Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signals in St Petersburg.
