Original canvas on its original stretcher. The canvas is very slightly buckling in the upper right corner. There are tiny pin holes located along the lower edge. Very faint stretcher bar marks are running vertically across the centre. Faint stretcher bar marks are visible elsewhere, most notably in the upper right. There are areas of craquelure in places, most noticeably in the whites of the two calves, the main cowherd's shirt, the white scarf of the girl, in the sky at the top left corner, as well as elsewhere. There are some minor frame abrasions along the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals minor retouching along the bottom edge, a minor spot of retouching to the white calf on the left, a few minor scattered spots in the sky in the upper left, to the smoke in the upper right, as well as a few very minor spots elsewhere. Held in a gilt wooden frame with decorative mouldings. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note
Painted in 1895, Children Herding Calves dates from the period during which Sergei Vinogradov was living in Kharkov (1890-1898). While Vinogradov struggled to accept the rural pace of life and, as his close friend Mikhail Yarovoy recalled, ‘missed Moscow and yearned for it’, he was greatly influenced by the surrounding countryside and ‘worked a lot both in drawing and composition’, pastoral images becoming central to his work from this period. Vinogradov made several preparatory sketches and studies for Children Herding Calves (fig.1), which allowed him to paint a second version later in 1895 which now belongs to the Brodsky Museum in St Petersburg (fig.2).
