Condition

Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to a relatively new, keyed wooden stretcher. There is a small, rectangular patched repair in the lower right quadrant as viewed from the reverse. This is delaminating slightly but appears stable. The canvas displays undulations and deformations, including in the upper left and right corners of the composition. These appear stable. Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are intermittent paint losses on the extreme edges of the composition which are obscured when the painting is housed in it's frame. The paint surface has an overall pattern of raised craquelure. This appears stable at present. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows scattered retouchings, including: 1) small retouchings in the background above the seated figure's head in the upper left, near the upper edge and right edge, 2) a retouching on the seated figure's leg below the knee, 3) in the brown paint on the satyr in the lower right and in the brown paint right of the Satyr's arm, 4) and other small retouchings. Due to the opaque varnish layers it is not possible to ascertain the extent of the retouchings. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and no further work is required.
