Original canvas which is slack on the stretcher. There are a number of holes, pinholes, punctures and dents with corresponding paint loss throughout the canvas. There is a layer of thick surface dirt and surface scratches, notably to the face of the boy on the left, to his jacket and trousers. The canvas has frayed along the tacking edges and there are a number of pinholes running along the edges. There is craquelure to the impasto in places. UV light reveals two areas of retouching to holes on a tree trunk in the top right quartile. The painting would benefit from restoration. Held in a simple wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.
