Growing up in post-war Leningrad surrounded by ruins and corroded churches, Gleb Bogomolov developed a special affection for Christian-Byzantine art. Fascinated by the colors, mosaics and mysteries of this period and genre, his semi-religious, semi-architectural paintings are similarly multilayered and complex with compositions that often feature crosses, arcs, mandalas, pillars and columns. He helped organize the first non-conformist exhibition at the Ivan Gaza Culture Palace in Leningrad in December 1974.
