Condition

Overall measurements: 51cm the left hand side, 53cm the right hand side, 54cm acorss the top, 53cm across the bottom. There are two very small areas of old moth damage which can be seen within the madder ground of the medallion, as white now, and above right in the ivory field. With original flatweave to the upper end with 'nicks' to the left and right hand side which partialy extend into the outer soumac minor border, again visible from photograph. There is also a small split, approx. 2cm, in the centre of the flatweave running vertically into the soumac minor outer border, visible from photgraph. This area may benefit from professional attention. Vestiges of cord secruing hoops to the lower end. Original sidecords with some losses. A good example.

Catalogue Note

A very similar example listed as in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Wendel R. Swan is published in (Ed) Dodds. D & Eiland M., Oriental Rugs from Atlantic Collections, Philadelphia, 1996, p. 24. The present example is unusual in use of pale blue and generous spacing within the border, which is seen in another example in the same publication, ibid, p. 109, pl. 114.
