Catalogue Note

This is a very interesting work exhibiting some unusual features for Oushak production,  most notably the 'cloudbands' in the field which are a very rare inclusion, see the example from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection which also exhibits this feature, lot 6 in this sale. For another example, in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Istanbul, inv. No. 865, dated to the early 17th century, see Kircheim (1996), pp. 145, pl. 106. Also interestingly, the star motifs in the field which are more associated with the so called 'Transylvanian' rugs, again see the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection example, lot 32 in this sale.

Kircheim (1996): Kircheim, Turkish Carpets from 13th - 18th centuries, Istanbul 1996, Istanbul 1996, pp. 145, pl. 106.
