The enduring popularity of Oushak 'medallion' carpets is evidenced by the number of surviving examples, which span some 200 years of production. Contemporaneously sought after by the wealthy households of Europe, these carpets are equally effective as decoration today.
Overall measurements: 214cm across the top, 214cm across the bottom, 340cm the left and side, 344cm the right hand side.
Pile generally low, to knot bars, with spot foundation visible. Repilling scattered throughout variously in all colours: mostly to the reds in the spandrels (the dark forest green has oxidised, so associated pile quite work extensively). The pendants of central medallion also with repliling. Side guard stripes mainly rebuilt. Lower end with rewoven corner on left hand side, section approximately 30cm deep by 55cm wide, extending in an 'L' shape through th eborder to centre of the field and end guards also rewoven. Upper end with new end guards and section of rewoven border in the right hand half of border (approximately 60 by 5cm).
Carpet clearly extensively overhauled at one stage, but still reads well as a classical Oushal medallion carpet and drawing is slightly naive, which is typical of 18th century production of this type. All these aspects are reflected in the estimate, as early examples of this genre make several multiples of the present estimate. It is in sound, ready to use condition. It would be better if used in light traffic area as pile is thin.
