"I acquired this from Joost Ritman, the Dutch Renaissance Art collector. What a contrast between the strictly geometric border design and the flower bunches! Were they influenced by French Valentine cards?" (EH)
Overall measurements: 108cm across the top, 111cm across the bottom, 249cm the left hand side, 247cm the right hand side.
Pile varies 3-4mm in the borders to knotbars in the brown of the field, The brown is mainly corroded and there is some spot re-piling in the browns and an area of re-piling in the lower right hand corner of the field beneath the flower wreath visible as areas of gingery browns, (visible in the image online). The reduction in length is the upper edge of the field. Original border is pieced back in. Minor restorations to sidecords, tips of corners lower end restored. Couple of small 'nibbles' at the upper edge, now restored. An iconic rug, extraordinary field design and range of colour.
