Condition

River landscape: The bevelled panel is formed of a single panel, and is flat and stable. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is an area of paint loss in the water (lower right) measuring approx. 1.5 x 0.5 cm. (visible in the catalogue illustration), and frame abrasion along the left and right margins, as well as a very faint, diagonal surface scratch approx. 5 cm. in the house and path (lower left). Vertical fine lines of old, discoloured retouchings are visible in the sky, which follow the grain of the panel. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish underneath which these are just visible, as well as a more recent retouching in the highest window of the building on the left. Winter village: The bevelled panel is formed of a single panel, and is flat and stable. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured and streaky. There is frame abrasion along the upper margin. Vertical fine lines of old, discoloured retouchings which follow the grain of the panel are visible throughout, and there is retouching in the figure wearing red (lower right). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish underneath which these are just visible, and the more recent retouching in the figure in red is more apparent.
